Mastering SRS for
SC & PR

A definitive guide for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents to maximize tax relief and build a robust retirement nest egg.

What is SRS?

The Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) is a voluntary scheme to complement your Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings. Unlike CPF, participation is optional, and you can contribute varying amounts at your own discretion, subject to a cap.

  • Voluntary contributions
  • Operated by private sector banks
  • Specifically tailored benefits for SC/PR
Annual Contribution Cap
$15,300per year

Maximum tax relief available for Singapore Citizens & PRs.

Tax Savings

Every dollar contributed reduces your taxable income dollar-for-dollar, helping you drop to a lower tax bracket.

Investment Freedom

Funds can be invested in shares, bonds, REITs, and unit trusts to grow your retirement nest egg tax-free.

50% Tax Concession

Only 50% of withdrawals at retirement age are taxable, spread over a 10-year period to minimize tax liability.

Withdrawal Rules

Understanding when and how to withdraw is critical to maximizing your SRS benefits.

Before Age 63

If you withdraw before the statutory retirement age (currently 63):

  • 100% of the withdrawal amount is taxable.
  • A 5% penalty is imposed on the withdrawn amount.

On/After Age 63

Once you reach the statutory retirement age (currently 63):

  • 0% Penalty
No penalty imposed on withdrawals made on or after retirement age.
  • 50% Tax ExemptionOnly half of the withdrawal amount is subject to income tax.
  • 10-Year Withdrawal WindowWithdrawals can be spread over 10 years, starting from the first penalty-free withdrawal.

Pro Tip: The $40,000 Sweet Spot

Example: Withdrawing $40,000/year when fully retired means only $20,000 is taxable. Since the first $20,000 of income in SG is tax-free, your SRS withdrawal is effectively 0% tax.
